When John began drawing, he only worked with pen and ink. Eventually, he got a case of watercolor markers and began experimenting with his art. This image of Roger is the color version of the pen and ink of a series he did depicting his bandmates as he thought their ancestors would have been. John always fancied Roger as a bit of a cowboy. Or possibly it was Roger that fancied himself that way. In all of John’s works his dry sense of humor is evident as he pokes fun at himself and his fellow musicians.
“He was nicknamed ‘The Ox’, as well as ‘Thunderfingers’ and in a poll at the end of the 20th century he was voted ‘Bassist of the Millennium’ in Musician magazine.” He was one of the founding members of the British rock band The Who and their bass player. In 1995 John’s other career as an artist was also taking off, starting with releasing a limited-edition serigraph of his Who by Numbers cover. Over the next seven years John toured with The Who and attended art shows featuring his works. In 2002, on the eve of his art tour and The Who’s U.S. summer concert tour, John passed away in his sleep. John may be gone but his life lives on through his music and art.
Walnut Street Gallery and The Art of Rock and Roll™ began working with John and his personal manager, Cy Langston, in 1995. Over the next seven years the gallery published all of John’s art, distributed his works and managed the touring art shows. Since John’s death the gallery has been privileged to be the caretakers of his remaining original works and limited-edition prints. What you see on this site is the final body of work John created. If you are a fan of The Who and John Entwistle this is an incredible opportunity to acquire a rare piece of art for your collection.
